SPRING IN QUARANTINE
I actually started this post back in late April hoping that we would have really good blooms this year. Well we sure did. I was also able to go out to Highland Park ad photograph this year's blooms. It was a pretty hot day but it felt good to get out. So I grabbed my BFF, my camera and a mask and headed out. I've posted the current pictures at the end of the blog. They were gorgeous and smelled amazing! It was also nice to get out and get some fresh air after being cooped up for so long! I finally had a chance to pull the pics out of my camera and finish this post. Check out the pics at the bottom of the post.
Totally true here in Upstate NY. April is quite a rainy chilly month. Temps range from the 40s to the 50s and an occasional day or two of warmer weather. As the month goes on it warms up a bit more. And with that showery weather come the May Lilacs. Rochester is well known for the different varieties of Lilacs that grow here. They even hold a festival in their honor.
A couple of years ago I got to photograph the lilacs which Rochester is known for. There aren't any Lilacs where I'm from in SoCal so it was so much fun to go to the park and photograph them.
So from what I understand there are over 1000 varieties of Lilacs. Lilacs are a bush but grow pretty tall like a tree. They also come in shades of pinks and whites, not just purples. In 2006 Syringa Vulgaris (the Common Lilac) was designated the New York state bush.
In the Spring the Lilacs permeate the air. You can get a whiff of them almost anywhere in Rochester. They grow along the canal, Expressway, in parks and fields...they're everywhere! The festival is held at Highland Park where there are hundreds of Lilac bushes. It really is a beautiful sight. Unfortunately this year's festival has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 virus. They are talking about rescheduling it like other festivals that have been cancelled this summer, but no date has been set.

Update: Here are the pictures of the Lilacs in full bloom. Enjoy!
2020 Lilacs.
Until then, stay safe out there.
