Letchworth State Park

Letchworth is one of the many state parks that New York has to offer. Any outdoors type would love this spot. Since I came to New York, every person that finds out I'm new to the state always mentions Letchworth. They also mention Stony Brook Park, (but that's another adventure waiting to be had). New York has so many state parks to offer, and not to mention the Adirondack Mountains, the Thousand Islands, and dozens of lakes.

Last week I decided to grab the dog and take off to Letchworth for some much needed alone time and a little re-connecting with nature. The drive was about 30-40 min from here so it was perfect. I put the dog in the truck, packed a couple of hiking items and took off. Letchworth offers a variety of activities like hiking for all levels and distances to tent camping, cabin camping and swimming. If you are on a budget, well, it's only $8 per vehicle. And you can take your four-legged friend as long as they stay on a leash and have up-to-date rabies vaccinations (they told me on the phone to bring proof but the lady at the entrance booth didn't ask for it).

We entered the park after a short conversation with the lady at the entrance about the trails and which one would be the best for myself and the dog since we are both not expert hikers. We drove in on the main road for about ten minutes. All the trails and camping sites stem from the main road which made it easy. We stopped at a couple of "view points" and took pictures. Finally I found the trail and drove into to the parking area. It was at the Lower Falls where she had suggested. On our hike we went. right away there were stone steps we had to go down, dozens of steps. Poor Foxy (the dog) had to be carried down. She is not good at going down stairs, only up, and then she takes an occasional tumble or slip. So I picked her up and we descended. I really need one of those baby packs up put in the front of your body for her...ha ha! Can you see it? Paws sticking out...maybe not. Possibly something without holes for "feet". Once there weren't anymore steps I let her down and we walked. There were several sets of steps but we just kept going. We only went maybe a mile in since I knew she can only really do about two miles without me having to carry her. She did great until about the last 50-75 stairs she just finally sat down and looked at me. I knew I'd have to carry her the rest of the way. When we got back to the beginning, we were beat. I was sweating and she was panting. We found a picnic bench, rested and drank more water.

We had a wonderful day. I could tell Foxy needed it too. She sniffed every tree and every little thing she could. After that we made our way back toward the entrance. I had seen a small souvenir shop that sold ice cream, a much deserved treat after that hike.

we spent about another half hour there and then headed out to see the town of  Mt. Morris.  Not a big town at all but cute. Their Main St is about two or three blocks long...yup...that's it, small town America.

I definitely have to go back in the Fall when the leaves are turning, which is soon! They say that being out in nature and all its sound for two hours boosts healing 800%!! I was gleaming for days. Even still, every time I think about it, I smile. I didn't even make a dent in seeing that park, but I figure that every time I go I will see another piece of nature's beauty.

Here are the photos from my adventure in Letchworth.

Until the next adventure!
